I find it very difficult to make
penny rugs in the 'hit and miss'
design. I feel much better if
the layout is structured into
a design before I begin stitching.
Both the Matilda and the Mamie
rugs this month were from one
pot of dye which helped bring
the design together. I think this will be my secret to making
more of the 'hit and miss' design as I enjoyed stitching these rugs.
The Matilda penny rug comes from my past. My taste
in decor is the traditional colonial style but I do remember
the old farmhouses of my childhood where these rugs
would feel at home.
I do not remember my Grandmother Slauenwhite but
I do remember the old farmhouse. My Grandfather still
lived in the house with my Uncle after Gran passed on.
My Dad and I would visit at blueberry time and as a little girl I was fascinated by the trip to the
past. No electricity in the late 50's and the house was just as it would have been in 1850.
I am not sure Grandmother Slauenwhite stitched needlework but my rug would have fit well in her
kitchen with its old black cookstove and simple necessities of life.
The Matilda penny rug is designed from aged, natural hand dyed vintage
woolens complimented by feather stitching from dyed make do threads.
The design is very primitive in style, with no two sides uniform, giving it
a very amateur, childlike quality in both the design and the stitching. The rug is finished
in a very small cotton binding and lining which I have aged to the shading in the rug.
The binding is very soft and worn cotton backing from an antique quilt.
The Matilda Rug measures 14 and 1/2 by 14 inches
