I am forever cutting too many circles. I like to play with
colours and design so there are many left from my rugmaking.
Of course a rug maker back in time used up and 'made do' as
that is the beginnings of the true antique penny rugs. Using up
scraps of wool too small or too thick to hook in a mat.
I like to start new rugs with a new dye pot of wool but on these
two primitive candle mats my Gran would be proud.
I used up and made do with the extra pennies from Matilda and
Mamie.
It takes a great amount of work before the stitching of a rug.
The wool is dyed several times and only then comes the chore
of cutting those hundreds of circles. I hand cut all of my circles
one at a time by hand and scissors as was the way of the early
rugmakers.
I enjoyed making both little candle mats and I hope you enjoy
my ' make do and use' designs.

No lining on this rug and
the spot is from the original
fabric used as the base.
I have used plaid in this
little rug as well as various
shade of greens and odd
pennies which I matched to the
plaid wool.
A very nice old fashioned penny rug that would look perfect
in your primitive home.

A very primitive candle mat
done on aged ticking. I have
used smaller pennies on this
mat... the smaller pennies
are more time stitching
but I like the look of
small pennies in a small rug
A very nice little primitive mat that has been aged to look
and feel a hundred years old and of course done in the
traditions of 'use up and make do' that was the beginnings
of penny rugs.
